Middle School Ministry

Cultivate: 5th and 6th graders
Anthem: 7th and 8th graders
Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30 pm

Middle schoolers meet to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith through time as a large group and in small groups!

  • Cultivate | 5th and 6th Grade

This age group is caught in-between. Fifth grade is a little too old for Children's Ministry and sixth grade is a little too young for confirmation discussions. We wanted to provide a space where they can come together in their own group, their own learning, their own growing. We're really going to focus in on the Bible basics.

Students will learn about the Bible, why it matters, how to read it, and diving deeper into the Gospels of the New Testament to see the power of Jesus!

  • Anthem | 7th and 8th Grade

This age group is at the age where they are beginning to declare their faith as their own. They are discovering why they believe what they believe after learning those Bible basics from previous middle school years. We're proclaiming our "anthem" so to speak! Let's learn how to defend our anthem.

During these years, students will focus in on Lutheran doctrine as we move a step closer to their Confirmation Day in the fall of freshman year. We will discuss topics like the Trinity, baptism, the Lord's Prayer, commandments, the Apostle's Creed, and more!

Cultivate: "To prepare, acquire, and develop"

Our biggest goal for our 5th and6th graders is that they begin to develop a firm foundation through the Bible basics and what it actually means to be a Christian. Life will inevitably get hard as we grow older, and our hope is that we will be able to grow in our understanding of who God is and how we can fight through when the going gets tough. What tools do we need to do that? That's where the Bible basics come in!

HYPE TEAM: Hype Team made its debut in Spring of 2021! Big questions were, "How can we get kiddos more engaged in worship?" AND "How can I show kids a new way to worship?" ENTER HYPE TEAM! With this new ministry, students can now see that we can worship God with our entire bodies. Jesus invites us to a party when come into relationship with Him! Hype Team is for all middle school grades and meets to learn choreography & lead the room in actions from the stage on Wednesday evenings. Its a great leadership opportunity and we'd love to invite more friends to the fun! Email Bailey if your student is interested!

FIRST COMMUNION: Calling all 5th graders! Communion is something we get to celebrate together as a church! We have the opportunity to remember Christ's sacrifice for us through the body and blood (bread & wine). We want to invite 5th grade students to a class to learn what Communion is all about, and then together we will take part in the sacrament during a Sunday morning worship service. First Communion training will be November 9, 2023. First Communion Sunday will be November 19, 2023.

ANTHEM: "A rousing or uplifting song for a particular group"

Growing closer to their high school years, things can get really hard for students. Our goal is that together, we can discover the ANTHEM of our lives. What is this? Well, we want to come together as believers to encourage & love one another. What's our purpose? How can we run on mission? How can we be a life-speaker and a world-changer? This is really when we will connect faith and life!

CONFIRMATION: The next step for our to-be 9th graders!

The beautiful part about Confirmation is that it's a stepping stone, it's definitely not a graduation for students. In this process, students are affirming their baptisms by sharing all they have learned and what they believe to be true about God. It's so sweet to see how God works in the lives of these students during their middle school years! Confirmation happens during October of a student's 9th grade year. With that timeframe, we ask students to get involved in The Edge (high school ministry) on Sunday afternoons to meet new friends to grow in Christ with. What we've noticed over the years is that students complete their faith statement and never come back to St. Mark's. With that in mind, we have BIG CHANGES planned for Confirmation beginning in Fall 2023. Learn more about our new Confirmation program.
